Agile PLM – Minor Enhancement Effort Estimation – Sizing Guidelines
My immediate need right now is for some standard estimation guideline in enhancing an existing production instance or installation of Agile PLM on premise (not cloud) on v9.3.6 to be exact. The enhancement could either be considered configuration (native objects/classes can suffice) OR might require customization (hard coding/programming required).
Is there some t-shirt sizing guideline for Agile PLM on-prem minor enhancements, something that follows a similar approach for packaged applications/COTS products, such as:
Configuration – Small/Simple – 10 hours, Medium – 20 hours, Large/Complex – 40 hours
Customization – Small/Simple – 15 hours, Medium – 30 hours, Large/Complex – 60 hours
Obviously supported by some definition and factors that are assumed to be considered as part of “Simple/Small”, “Medium”, and “Large/Complex” minor enhancements.
I also say “minor” enhancement in this case to distinguish it from a “major” enhancement would typically take over 2 weeks/10 days of man-hours.
I can definitely appreciate the question and desire to have some type of guideline, kind of like an automobile service estimator. As Patrick mentioned yesterday the effort costs can vary widely, particularly based on the experience level of the person doing the work. For example, a simple workflow configuration with associated role configuration can be a daunting task for some and may take a few days to complete. For an experienced consultant that effort can take a few minutes. Same thing with custom coding, a one-hour PX for an experienced developer can take a few days for an inexperienced developer. Quotations are driven based upon the consultant’s abilities and LOE for the given developer, not a price book. Another consideration is any ancillary activities that may impact the amount of time someone needs to participate for coordinating events, such as status calls, CRP support, and go live support. Stand-alone effort and coordinated effort is going to be different for the exact same task. In this case, I think it would be best to list some specific needs and people can reply with an estimate on LOE.
