Is there a way to only allow modification of manufacturer part if the part it is on is not released?

Hi,
I know that manufacturer parts are not under change control. Our issue is that if we give users modify mfr part privilege then they can modify it at any time, even if it is on a released part number.  We are med device – so that is a big problem. What do other med device companies do to limit the modification of mfr parts to only when it is not on a part, or when it is on a part but in preliminary lifecycle or on a change order?
Only solution I can think of  is that we only give users ‘create mfr part’ and ‘delete their own mfr part’ but no modify.  Then give the change analysts ‘modify mfr part’ so they can make sure the modification is done on a change order if the part has been released.  This is a pain for the creating user because if they screw up something during creation, they can’t modify it. It also means that we’d have to make all fields required so they have a chance to enter them because page two fields don’t show up till after the part is created which falls under modify so then they can’t modify them.
Am I missing something simple to fix this issue? Please let me know.

Thank you,
Laura

One solution is to become a big company, have someone(s) dedicated as Component Engineer and only give them modify privilege.

Good answer, unfortunately it’s a startup and everyone is putting in their own stuff.

Thanks

Laura, I am not sure, but  it is possible by creating new criteria with your conditions/checks and assign it to your modify privilege.

Hi Laura,

One of the solutions can be having a Process Extension(PX) on update Title Block of Manufacturer Part in such a way that PX will not allow to modify the Mfr.Part details if Mfr Part is used in Released Items.

Thank you all for your answers. I love your idea Karthik.

Naresh – I would love to just do it with a new modify but unfortunately you can’t build criteria that says ‘mfr part is on an unreleased part’. If agile would allow us to use the data from the ‘where used’ tab of the manufacturer part then I could do it by limiting the modify to mfr parts that are not on the where used tab of a part or even better, mfr parts that are on preliminary part’s where used tab.  Unfortunately, agile doesn’t allow that.  Best we get is you can limit add/remove of mfr part from mfr part tab of a part.

Thanks,
Laura
