Alternate BOMs

Hi,

Would like to solicit the general practice on how alternate BOMs are configured and handled on the PLM and ERP (JD Edwards) side.

Any input is much appreciated, thanks.

Have you given a thought of using BOM Variant management functionality in Agile which lets you derive multiple instances from specific optional BOMs?

Hi Swagoto,

I played with that years ago and there were reasons why we didn’t utilize that functionality. Just curious, is that what your company currently using and how do the BOMs transfer via integration to the ERP?

Look forward to hearing your insight.

BOM Variants is an interesting solution but keep in mind the integration to your ERP also needs to be able to handle it. I am guessing you must be handling alternates in your ERP system now. How?

The simplest way I have seen is adding the alternate on the BOM with the same line/find no and 0 quantity. SAP is not going to like that, but they have their way of handling alternates.

I believe they are manually manipulating work orders to change out the parts “on the fly”. Not sure if that’s the best approach. Qty 0 is what I’ve done at other companies as well. Thanks for your input Steve!

For changes in work order, close loop with introduction of deviations in agile.
Deviations are meant to track disruption or changes without altering revisions.

This formal process helps to identify all types of devations

  • Part deviations
  • Product deviation
  • Supplier deviations
  • Supplier part deviations
  • Manufacturing deviations
  • Manufacturing process deviations
