Razorleaf had the opportunity to participate in a Dassault event called POWER’BY Days. During the event, we learned that POWER’BY is a strategy and that the functionality is real and available both on-premise and on-cloud.

Razorleaf has blogged on the topic of POWER’BY in the recent past, see Digital Twins Powered by POWER’BY? and To POWER’BY or not to POWER’BY. On May 10-11, 2018, Razorleaf participated in POWER’BY Days sponsored by Dassault Systèmes for its business partners. We learned that POWER’BY is a Dassault strategy that enables non-CATIA V6 CAD data to be used for all the 3DEXPERIENCE brands, like DELMIA, SIMULIA, etc. Further, we learned that the functionality, although currently limited to CATIA V5 is real and available on-premise and on-cloud.

What we learned about POWER’BY as a strategy is that the strategy is about the long game. The idea is to not disrupt the CAD author (any CAD author) and to simultaneously create V6 Product Structure that unlocks all the values of the Platform including DELMIA, SIMULIA, etc.

How does it work? When an xCAD file is saved to the Platform using POWER’BY functionality there are two results: one, the xCAD files are saved or vaulted to the platform, and two, a V6 Physical Product is created. The physical product can be leveraged with other platform apps like simulation and manufacturing.

Currently, only specific versions of CATIA are currently supported with 3DEXPERIENCE R2018x FD02 (FP1814). Current CATIA versions supported with POWER’BY are:

·        V5-6R2015 (V5R25)

·        V5-6R2017 (V5R27)

·        V5-6R2018 (V5R28)

Currently, there is no planned date to support V5-6R2016 (V5R26) although it is likely that V5R26 would be supported in the future. Also, POWER’BY support for SOLIDWORKS is planned for Q2 or Q3 of 2018, with other xCAD software being supported later in 2018 or early 2019.

The future of the Unified Product Structure of V6 enabled by POWER’BY could be a real game changer for Dassault and its customers.
