General Availability (GA) of Dassault Systèmes flagship 3DEXPERIENCE Platform was announced in early January 2018. The release, of course, introduces many new features, but more important R2018x enables the POWER’BY functionality enabling non-CATIA V6 users to create V6 product structures.  The release is the first of a series of releases in R2018x that will increasingly provide POWER’BY functionality across CATIA V5, SOLIDWORKS and the remaining XCAD products, like Creo, NX, Inventor, Solid Edge, etc.

What’s POWER’BY?

In November 2017, Jonathan Scott described how POWER’BY might enable digital twin capabilities in this article Digital Twins Powered by POWER’BY? And in December 2017, Michael Craffey asked whether customers would have to use POWER’BY in his article To POWER’BY or not to POWER’BY.

Essentially, POWER’BY enables non-CATIA V6 CAD users the ability to keep their existing CAD design software while enabling the ability to create V6 product structures for sophisticated downstream capabilities such as systems design, manufacturing planning, simulation, etc.

Razorleaf will stay on top of this topic and provide increasing levels of details as those details become available. Soon, we’ll let our readers know what specific fix pack of R2018x will enable CATIA V5 and SOLIDWORKS POWER’BY functionality. At that time or shortly after we’ll know when the other CAD platforms will be supported by POWER’BY.
